DSU is made up of volunteer men and women who are interested in assisting the Sheriff's office. There is no required skills set and members do not need to reside within Maricopa county.

    Prior to participating in an active search members must complete several training requirements, learn CPR and take part in monthly meetings.

    DSU has a command chain found in similar organizations. There is a Posse Commander, Lieutenants, Sargents, i.e. (Team leaders, Program director and Quatermaster) and general members. There is also a Board of Directors designated to help the commander operate the posse.
